High, Low, Buffalo

My mom, sister, and I were wrapping up our fall girls’ day. You know, the kind filled with every cliché autumn activity you can think of. Apple orchard? Check. Pumpkin patch? Of course. Steamy mugs of cider? Naturally. My sister loves to “do it for the ’gram,” so nothing less would do.

As we sat down for dinner before heading our separate ways, she looked at me and asked, “Leah, what was your high, low, and buffalo of today?”

Buffalo? For a second I thought she was hinting at some South Dakotan fall tradition I’d somehow missed. Maybe a hayride with livestock? I know about sharing highs and lows, but buffalo?

Carley explained that a buffalo is the unexpected part of your day. Something funny, awkward, surprising, or just plain weird—basically a little twist that makes the day memorable.

Now, I’ve started asking the same question after a busy day or even a long day at work. It’s a simple way to pause and reflect—and almost every time, it sparks a laugh as we remember the day’s buffalo moments.

Looking for your next buffalo moment? These books are full of unexpected twists, laugh-out-loud scenes, and little surprises that make reading an adventure of its own.
