Not-So-Spooky Halloween Books

By Tricia B.

There’s something special about spooky season. Pumpkins start appearing on doorsteps, every food and drink seems to have a pumpkin spice twist, and Halloween decorations pop up all around us. It’s a fun time of year, but for little ones, some of those ghosts, monsters, and creepy decorations can feel a bit too real.

When my kids were younger, I remember how easily they could be frightened by Halloween decorations or a scary commercial on TV. Young children are still learning to tell the difference between pretend and reality, so the sights and sounds of the season can sometimes be overwhelming.

Luckily, Halloween doesn’t have to be scary to be fun! Sharing a silly monster story, a friendly ghost tale, or a not-too-spooky vampire adventure can be a wonderful way to get in the holiday mood. If you have little ones in your life, curl up with them and check out these books that bring a little eerie magic to storytime—without too many scares!
