No Expiration Date on Love

I love a good romance read, but as I get older, I sometimes find it harder to identify with younger protagonists. A lot of popular fiction skews toward a younger demographic, and while a good romance is a good romance, sometimes my heart yearns for characters with more insight, more experience, and frankly, a few more years on the clock. The folly of youth can be cute, or simply frustrating. I find myself looking for more seasoned characters who are less likely to make me roll my eyes at their decision-making!
Everybody deserves a happy ending, and the payoff can be so much more rewarding if it takes us on a longer journey to get there. Age can also bring wisdom. After all, don’t we all understand ourselves just a little bit better with every jaunt around the sun?
So many elements can make up a great romance. Maybe we fall in love with the characters, maybe we hang on every word of perfectly crafted dialogue, or maybe we are swept off our feet by EXCEPTIONAL chemistry. While it probably boils down to the quality of the writing above all else, I must say I am convinced older protagonists make for a more compelling love story when I’m craving depth along with the butterflies.
So, whether you’re seeking a meet-cute for the more mature or a second chance at love for seniors, here are a few suggestions for a perfect romantic escape.
The Half of It: A Novel by Juliette Fay
58-year-old Helen Spencer can pinpoint the night when her life started to go awry: a romantic night in the woods in her senior year of high school with a boy named Cal Crosby. Forty years later, a chance meeting might just help her figure out what went wrong. This is a beautiful tale but fair warning, I cried a lot during this one, so keep a box of tissues at the ready.
Sylvia’s Second Act by Hilary Yablon
Things are not going well for 63-year-old Sylvia at her Boca retirement community: she just found her husband in bed with another woman! When she realizes this isn’t the life she wants anymore anyway, she and her best friend Evie decide to set up a new life in Manhattan. Naturally, hijinks ensue in this hilarious tale of starting over.
Nora Goes Off Script by Annabel Monaghan
A romance channel screenwriter turns lemons into lemonade when she pens a script inspired by the collapse of her marriage. What will happen when former Sexiest Man Alive, Leo Vance, is cast as her ne’er-do-well husband? A romance filled with warmth, wit, and wisdom.
The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern: A Novel by Lynda Cohen Loigman
A dual-timeline tale packed with magic. About to turn 80, newly retired pharmacist Augusta Stern is adrift. After relocating to an active senior community in southern Florida, she crosses paths with the man who broke her heart 60 years earlier. A perfect pick for those who love a second chance romance.
The Bookshop of Second Chances by Jackie Fraser
For those partial to a Scottish setting, this might be the perfect choice. After the collapse of her marriage and the loss of her job, Thea Mottram is lost. Thank goodness a distant uncle has left her a house, along with an impressive antique book collection. It’s a pity the local bookshop owner she hopes to sell them to is such a curmudgeon.
Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld
A writer for a late-night comedy show observes that funny, average-looking men can land relationships with beautiful, accomplished women, but laments that the reverse is unlikely for a woman. Enter Noah Brewster, a pop music sensation with a reputation for dating models, who might just be the one to test that theory.
One & Only by Maureen Goo
This book is my wild card pick, as it features a reverse age gap romance! On the eve of her 40th birthday, a loveless matchmaker begins a fling with a much younger man – but could it be more? Cassia Park must decide between fate and chance in this tale of soulmates. This is one for those who love some magical realism.
