Digital Developments: Endings and Beginnings

Siouxland Libraries will be ending hoopla services effective March 31, 2026, but there are still many options for eBooks, eAudiobooks, and digital streaming with your library card—some of which are brand new!
Where can I find eBooks and eAudiobooks?
Libby will continue to be a resource for eBooks, eAudiobooks, and digital magazines. Libby uses a lending model that resembles borrowing a physical book – only one person can borrow it at a time. With the absence of hoopla, we're planning to allocate additional funds to make more titles available in Libby, which should help keep wait lists as short as possible. We are also excited to announce a new digital sharing partnership with the South Dakota Titles to Go Digital Consortium and the Black Hills Digital Library Consortium. Beginning February 9, Siouxland Libraries customers will be able to borrow eligible titles from those collections through Libby. More information about this will be coming soon.
Where can I find digital movies and TV?
Kanopy, a much-requested platform, was added to the library’s digital services at the beginning of January! Kanopy is a streaming service with hundreds of films, documentaries, educational videos, and kids’ programming. The library added several packages of content, so all titles are unlimited use. Kanopy Kids is a special section of the Kanopy streaming service that’s just for children with age-appropriate movies, TV shows, animated storybooks, educational programs, and other fun videos designed especially for younger viewers (roughly ages 2 to 8). Get started with Kanopy by downloading the Kanopy app or visiting Kanopy.com. Follow the prompts to sign up or watch the quick video at the bottom of this page.
What do I need to do now?
If you would like to keep your borrowing history, log into hoopla, select “My Hoopla,” then select “History,” and either take a screenshot or write down your previously borrowed titles. Due to privacy laws, library staff can’t access your borrowing history.
Hoopla services will end on March 31, 2026. Any titles borrowed on or prior to this date will remain available through the end of the loan period.
Why is the library discontinuing hoopla?
We know hoopla is a valued resource for many. Unfortunately, hoopla’s pay-per-use model has become too expensive to continue. The library pays up to $2.99 each time a title is borrowed, and last year more than $183,000 was spent on Hoopla content. While hoopla is one of our most expensive digital platforms, it is used by only 10% of our cardholders.
We have worked to manage these costs by reducing monthly borrows and lowering the price cap per title. Even with these changes, a recent cost analysis showed that this level of spending is not sustainable. Any further reduction in spending would compromise the platform’s quality and usability, so after careful consideration, we’ve made the decision to end the Hoopla subscription.
We are grateful to everyone who has used hoopla and encourage you to check out our other digital resources, including Kanopy and the soon-to-be-increased offerings on Libby.
Please contact the library with any questions. Thank you, library users!
