There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather

Reading is not so very different from snow sports.
—Spoken like someone who spends more time turning pages than carving powder, I'm sure, but hear me out.
Some books are like cross-country skiing, made for gliding along and soaking in the surroundings; some are all downhill: a rush like surrendering to gravity and a blast of cold air in your face. Others are more like tubing—a ride with some bounce and maybe getting turned around once or twice. A truly special book may feel just like riding the ski lift.
Winter can be a dark, depressing time of year, or you can take advantage of the season's singularity. Even if playing in the snow doesn't excite you, winter scenery is the perfect mood-setting backdrop for a good read. Deep indigo sky, snow on the conifers, fireplace crackling, swathed in a blanket, book propped on your knees? Yes, please.
Get out your metaphorical skis to make the most of this much-maligned season with our Winter Reading Program, running December 1 to February 6, 2026. All who complete a BINGO on their card get a finisher's prize and a chance to win the grand prize: a Siouxland Libraries blanket (great for enswathing yourself)!
