Ahoy there, matey! It be time to find yer sea legs and embrace the life of a swashbuckler—to hoist the t’gallants and chase the horizon all yer merry days.

Talk Like a Pirate Day be nearly upon us. Come September 19, ye best be knowin' how to ready the sails and batten down the hatches.

I know what yer thinkin’—we be miles away from the briny deep. Aye, but a pirate’s life is easier than ye think.

So belay yer carousin’! Fetch yer hurdy gurdy! And answer the call of the sea in three easy steps.

Step 1: Download the Mango Languages app and learn how to speak like a pirate

Blimey barnacles! With yer library card, ye can access the Mango Languages app to learn any of over 70 languages—includin’ Pirate. Take lessons on vocabulary, grammarrrrrr, and pirate culture. Ye can’t be addressin’ yer captain in the same way ye insult a scallywag!

Naught but six units be needed to complete the Pirate course. This be the perfect opportunity to learn somethin’ new—especially if yer schedule be founderin’.

Step 2: Use the Pirate language setting on the check-out kiosks

Alright, me hearty, now that ye be fluent in the jargon of swashbucklers, it be time to plunder—err, check out yer books—like a pirate.

A slew o’ language options be available on our check-out kiosks, to accommodate our diverse community—landlubbers and buccaneers, alike. After pressin’ the “Language” button, simply select “Pirate” and all yer troubles will sail away.

Don’t hesitate to “call th’ first mate” if ye need assistance.

Step 3: Set sail with some swashbuckling tales

Aye, ye can explore the high seas from the comfort of yer own home. We’ve many a tale about seaworthy adventures, foolhardy shipwrecks, and unlikely survival.

Now hear me, matey—some of these stories be not for the faint of heart. Out at sea, there be trials: starvation, disease, conflict, and violence—not to mention poor hygiene practices that’ll shiver yer timbers.

As for the crews—well, ye be warned. Amidships, there be no shortage of crime, betrayal, and blunderin’ decisions that stir up a typhoon of trouble. Some be heroes, some be villains, and some flounder about between the two.

But if ye can find hope in the havoc—dig up the treasure, as it were—then climb aboard! A venturesome tale awaits ye.

Fair winds and followin’ seas to ye!
