Meet the Bloggers: Alice. Cartoon avatar of Alice.

Your intrepid blog team comes from across our library system's branches, specializing in all different areas of library work. Today we’re shining the spotlight on Alice. Go to the Alice S. tag at the end to see all articles she’s authored!

Author I’ll read anything they write: Freida McFadden, Christina Lauren, Elle Kennedy

Myself described in three fictional characters: Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Hermione Granger, Katherine Heigl’s character in The Ugly Truth.

What always makes me laugh: Instagram reels, especially from @charlieberens, @ohhyoubetcha, and @dudedad

My hobbies (other than reading!): I really love coloring, camping, being in nature, and playing board games and card games.

Best costume I ever wore: A group of coworkers and I dressed up as Clue characters.  It was a LOT of fun.  I was Mrs. White. 😊

My favorite family tradition: The weekend after Thanksgiving my kids and I spend a lot of time decorating for Christmas.  It’s when we usually start playing Christmas music all the time, we put up at least four trees, we sit by the light of the Christmas tree at night, and begin cooking and baking all the family favorite sweet treats!

What I wanted to be when I grew up:  I wanted to be a teacher.  In a way that came true, I just don’t teach in a formal classroom setting. I love helping others and definitely teach my kiddos at home.

If I could go back and talk to my younger self, one thing I’d say: Remember the movie A Cinderella Story? That quote is still true – Why are you trying to fit in when you were born to stand out?

My favorite book: Quiet: the Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain

My ideal reading setting is: I am always on the go – whether it is kiddo soccer games, seeing family, church activities, or just running errands.  As long as I have my earbuds or my car connected via Bluetooth, I can read anywhere.  I’m a HUGE eAudio user.

My favorite quote from a book: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss, I Can Read with My Eyes Shut

If I was a mythological/supernatural creature, it would be: A phoenix.

My dream vacation would involve: I’ve wanted to go to Disney World® my whole life.  I think spending a handful of days there (Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, etc.), then at Universal's The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, and then another few days out shopping or lounging on the Florida coast beaches... sounds heavenly.

My top “thing” at the library is:  Interlibrary Loan.

Favorite library memory: When I worked more regularly on the floor at the Downtown Library, I helped a man on the computers for several days over a couple weeks.  I showed him how to create a resume using Word templates, save to a flash drive, create an email address, write a cover letter, and apply for jobs.  About a month later I saw him working at Hy-Vee.  Those full-circle moments and seeing how the library can literally change lives is extremely powerful.
