Message from Chief Thum
"As a department, we are grateful for your interest, and we hope the information provided on this page will help you learn about our agency and our community. Although the facts and details on this page are important and show us as a competitive department in pay and benefits, we have something here in Sioux Falls that makes us truly special that can't be expressed in numbers or facts.
Sioux Falls holds a community and a local government that supports its Law Enforcement. Our Mayor and City Council vocally and publicly express their support with words and their actions. Our New 50 Million Dollar Public Safety Training Campus and our rapidly growing department are both a testament to that fact. While times have been challenging recently throughout the country for Law Enforcement, our community has repeatedly stood with us and expressed their support often and loudly, far exceeding the detractors. If you seek a home to start or continue your Law Enforcement career and raise your family, there are few better. Please consider joining us in serving both a great department and community."
I’ve wanted to be a police officer my entire life. I grew up in small-town Minnesota, and continued my education at South Dakota State University (SDSU). After college, I knew that South Dakota was where I wanted to live and build my future. After doing research on cities to live in South Dakota, I was immediately interested in Sioux Falls and the direction the city was heading in.
I chose to pursue a career with the Sioux Falls Police Department during a career fair at my college. When speaking with the Sioux Falls Police Department, I could tell there was a genuine love and passion for the work they do and that it was extremely rewarding. I moved out of my small Iowa town and stepped into something completely new.
I chose a career in Law Enforcement as I wanted to help people in the community I lived in. Prior to working for the Police Department, I was employed for Child Protection Services. While I was there, I worked alongside the Police Department often, and enjoyed this type of work so in turn I applied for a job with the Police Department. I have now been an officer for 11 years.
I have always been interested in a couple of vocations, teaching elementary school and being a police officer. I chose to be a teacher and taught for several years in Iowa and California. I chose to move to Sioux Falls because it is a great community to raise a family.
