How do I place a hold?

If you search the Library Catalog and discover that the material you want is already checked out, you can place a hold on it. This will reserve it for you when it is returned to the Library. You can place a hold on most items at the Library.

When the material is available, you will receive a notice from the Library telling you that you can pick it up at the circulation desk at the branch location you select.

To place a hold online at siouxlandlib.org:

  1. Click on Library Catalog and search for what you want.
  2. If you don't care which copy you get, click on the button that says "Place Hold on Next Available Copy."* If you want a specific copy or volume, click on the title of the item to see the full information; then click on "Place Hold on this Specific Copy” beside the copy you want.*
  3. Enter your library barcode number and PIN and click on "Login."
  4. Select the location where you want to pick up the material.
  5. Click on "Request."
  6. If holds are not allowed on the item, you will get a red message telling you the request has failed.

What is the difference between “Place Hold on Next Available Copy” and “Place Hold on this Specific Copy”?

  • “Place Hold on Next Available Copy” means you will get the next copy that becomes available. This is usually the best way to put a hold on a book where all the copies are the same. Most times you will get the book you want more quickly.
  • "Place Hold on this Specific Copy” is used when you want a specific volume or disc in a set.
