Ancestry Library
is only available within Siouxland Libraries branches.
It provides access to more than one billion names in more than 3,000 databases, including digital images of the 1790-1930 U.S. censuses, as well as immigration, court, church and ethnic records, city directories, genealogical societies, Social Security Death Index, Civil War Pension Index, and 700 historical maps. Includes 90 million U.S. war records from 1607-1975 and gravestone details of 3.5 million deceased U.S. soldiers.

With NewsBank you can search Argus Leader archives back to 1999 for the full text of local and regional news stories. You can also find and print complete local and regional obituaries.

Getting a Library Card

You can fill out a registration form for a library card at any Siouxland Libraries' location.

Cards are available to anyone owning or renting property within the city limits of Sioux Falls or in Minnehaha County, outside of the city of Dell Rapids.

- [+] How do I place a hold?
If you search the Library Catalog and discover that the material you want is already checked out, you can place a hold on it. This will reserve it for you when it is returned to the Library. You can place a hold on most items at the Library.
When the material is available, you will receive a notice from the Library telling you that you can pick it up at the circulation desk at the branch location you select.
To place a hold online at siouxlandlib.org:
- Click on Library Catalog and search for what you want.
- If you don't care which copy you get, click on the button that says "Place Hold on Next Available Copy."* If you want a specific copy or volume, click on the title of the item to see the full information; then click on "Place Hold on this Specific Copy” beside the copy you want.*
- Enter your library barcode number and PIN and click on "Login."
- Select the location where you want to pick up the material.
- Click on "Request."
- If holds are not allowed on the item, you will get a red message telling you the request has failed.
* What is the difference between “Place Hold on Next Available Copy” and “Place Hold on this Specific Copy”?
- “Place Hold on Next Available Copy” means you will get the next copy that becomes available. This is usually the best way to put a hold on a book where all the copies are the same. Most times you will get the book you want more quickly.
- "Place Hold on this Specific Copy” is used when you want a specific volume or disc in a set.
- "Place Hold on this Specific Copy” is used when you want a specific volume or disc in a set.
To place a hold by phone: Call 367-8720 or any Siouxland Libraries location.
To place a hold in person: Ask at the desk of any Siouxland Libraries location.
- [+] How do I renew materials?
Most items can be renewed twice. Items that cannot be renewed are: items on hold, and Interlibrary Loans.
To Renew by internet at siouxlandlib.org
- Click on Library Catalog.
- Click on My Account.
- Enter your library barcode number and pin.
- Click on Items out.
- Check the item(s)to renew.
- Click Renew button.
- Verify that the item has been renewed by checking the date due. If an item cannot be renewed, you will receive a renewal denied message in red.
To Renew by phone: Call 367-7340. Enter your library card number and follow the directions given over the phone. Or call any Siouxland Libraries location. The phone number for the Main Library circulation desk is 367-8700.
To Renew in person: Ask at the circulation desk of any Siouxland Libraries location.

- You can see what you have checked out using the Library Catalog.
- Click on the Library Catalog button at the top of this screen.
- Click on My Account
- Enter your library barcode number and PIN.
- Click on Items Out.

- [+] How do I use "Auto Repair Reference Center?"
With the Auto Repair Reference Center, you have unlimited free Internet access to information on over 23,000 vehicles from 1954 to the present, as well as 60,000 technical service bulletins, wiring diagrams, labor time guide & estimator, and much more. The Auto Repair Reference Center also has a section called "Car & Repair Tips" that can help with maintenance of your vehicle. Within this there is even a list of basic tools you need for car repair. The Auto Repair Reference Center contains information on most major manufacturers of domestic and imported vehicles; with repair information for most vintage makes starting as far back as 1954. - [+] How do I request an item the library doesn't own?
If you search the Library Catalog and find that Siouxland Libraries doesn't have an item you want, you can ask the library to purchase it for the library collection, or you can ask the library to get it on short-term loan from another library. For more information about these services, call Information Services at 367-8720.

Purchase Suggestion Use this form if the material you are interested in has been published within the last 6 months. We will consider your suggestion as a purchase for the library. We are looking for titles that have broad appeal or interest. Our selectors will look at reviews and whether the title fills collection gaps or updates areas of our collection. Textbooks are not purchased.
Interlibrary Loan Use Interlibrary Loan if you want to request a magazine or journal article, or if you want to borrow a book from another library (the book must be more than 6 months old). Audio and video materials are not available through Interlibrary Loan.
- [+] How do I find a book on CD?
- Go to the Library Catalog.
- Enter your search word (author or title) in the search box.
- Below the search boxes you will find the "Limits" area. Choose "Books on CD only".
To see a list of all of the Books on CD:
- Go to the Library Catalog.
- In the "Any Keyword" box type sound.
- In the Limit box, choose "Books on CD only".
- [+] How do I access eBooks and print pages?
You can find eBooks in one of two ways:
- While doing a search in the library catalog, or
- by clicking on the eBooks at NetLibrary link from the Reference and Online Resources list, or
- by clicking here.
You must create an account to use the eBooks.
- Click on How to Access eContent at the NetLibrary login screen, then
- Click on the Create a Free Account link in the upper right corner, then
- Fill in the requested information.
If you are trying to access these eBooks from outside the library, you may not have the "Create a Free Account" link on your screen. If this happens, call Information Services at the library (367-8720) and ask them to set up an account for you.
To print: You can print individual pages, but not the whole book. At the top of the page you want to print, click on the Show Acrobat Tools icon, and then click on the print icon from that toolbar. (If one doesn't appear, then use the browser toolbar print icon.)
